Ford F2. 50 Cabela's Edition - Web Exclusive. Whenever I have time to enjoy the outdoors, it's usually in the company of my two retrievers, who my wife and I have trained to hunt. Game bird hunting puts the dogs through their paces in mostly swampy, rough and tumble fields. It is the type of sport that begs for four- wheel drive truck and a king- sized payload.
Photo 2/6. | High up in the San Diego mountain range, Steve and Jeff enjoy the views with the 2. Cabela's edition from. Ford. It's here that we test drove it on the 9. Raney Ranch. So when I got the opportunity to test drive the new 2. Cabela's- inspired F2. I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

I loaded up the dog kennels, and hit the road to see how useful it was in real world hunting situations. What I Discovered. Along the lines of special editions from Eddie Bauer and King Ranch- the Cabela's F2. Super Duty crew cab 4x. But looks can be deceiving as you know, so I set a course that would test its suspension, drivetrain and driver comfort by visiting a working ranch high in the San Diego, California mountains as well as a stop- over in a marsh- like flatlands that happened to be loaded with pheasant, chuckar and duck, and miles of open trails. FX4, it was good to see that Ford did stay true to Cabela's dyed- in- the- wool sporting image. The Cabela's edition offered a hidden, fully lockable gun case under the rear seat. Unfortunately, the case was not removable and held only one rifle or shotgun. There's was a smaller lockable box of the center floor console, too, which was big enough for boxes of ammo, or valuables. Our complete Cabela's package consisted of branded heavy- duty floor mats, signature- stitched leather seating and two- tone exterior paint, Ford's "Tough Bed" liner, Cabela's inscripted 2.

2009 Ford F250 Cabela's Edition - Web Exclusive A truck for those who like to hunt, fish and have some fun. Read our review of the Ultimate Outdoors Truck: 2009 Ford F-250 Cabela's Edition fullsize pickup truck, a truck geared towards the outdoorsman and hunter.
With its 1. 2,5. 00- pound towing capacity and a 6. Cabela's edition I drove ($5. It would happily take you and the boys down to the water's edge thanks to its shift- on- the- fly four wheel drive in high or low range. With 6. 50 lb/ft of torque at 2. F2. 50 had enough grunt to pull small tree stumps if you needed it to clear a path, too. Our time behind the wheel of the rig pointed out it's strenghts as well as some of its weaknesses, but ultimately made us believers in Ford's strategy of targeting the outdoors market with improved build quality and lots of amenities. No joking, the Cabela's F2.
The turning radius wasn't much better either. The large tubular steps offered on this particular rig are bolted in position and they have a tendanciy to limit chassis clearance too- making them suspeceptable to being high- centered off- road. I would have rather seen an automatic power step like those from AMP Research as at least an option. Where it will feel at home is on the job site or at the local hardware store, whether you're picking up sheets of plywood, bags of cement mix and other hard to handle items. The integrated tailgate step and bed extender also improves its functionality. I don't think it's the most economical daily driver or the easiest to truck to manuvuer in tight places, but the coolness factor of the Cabela's edition was way off the chart. In four- wheel drive, the Cabela's edition made steep, loose dirt trails seem like child's play, and diesel chatter from the 6.
Ride comfort was about as good as any truck I've ever tested, even in the rocks crossing a dry stream bed as I made my way up to Raney Ranch. As for the engine's performance, you couldn't ask for much more power from the factory. Response is plentiful from it's twin turbo ultra- low sulfur diesel, and running light without a trailer, we could break the tires loose whenever we felt the urge. Although my time behind the wheel of the truck was brief, judging by what I learned it is a lot of rig for the investment.
It might not be for everyone, but for the avid sportsmen, recreationalist or contractor, it's a turn- key vehicle that needs nothing more than the occasional wash and wax. To see what others thought of the Cabela's edition, I asked a few fellow hunters to share some of their comments. Here's what they had to say: Steve Stevens has been training and breeding retrievers for the past 3.
He's an avid hunter, an AKC Hunt Test judge and a former competitor in the Master Nationals and Super Retriver Series. I've seen these new tailgate steps before, and I really like it.
It makes it really simple to get and out of the bed. I have a 2. 00. 2 Ford with the Lariat package and have never owned anything but Ford vehicles. I have three diesels right now. Two of mine are set- up with dog kennels.
The seats on this new F2. I really like the headroom and interior features. I'm 6 foot 4 inches tall and this truck gives me lots of room inside. This truck is similar to mine with leather seats. I don't cover them when I'm in the field with the dogs.
I like the feel of the leather. I'm a hunter and the Cabela's branding is nice. I buy everything from Cabela's, especially their outdoor clothing".
Photo 4/6. | 2. Ford F2. 50 Cabelas Edition steve Stevens Wendy Pennington has competed in AKC Obience, Agility and Field Trails event circuit for 2. She has also competed in the pretigious Master Nationals and Super Retrivers Series. Wendy hunts mostly pheasant and duck. I like the 3. 0- gallon fuel tank and the tailgate step on this truck.
When you're trying to get into the bed of a tall truck, it's difficult for us vertically challenged folks. I really liked the lockable gun case too. I think the Cabela's edition will hold up to the hunting and dog handling I do.
But this is an expensive truck and I don't think I'd pay more just for the Cabela's name attached to it. I shop at Cabela's for most. I don't like them enough to pay extra for their logo. I need to honest. One of the first things I'd do is put a camper shell on it because I want a cover for my dogs when I'm transporting them to the field. I think amenities like the leather seats and all the little compartments are. When you're either training dogs or hunting you're not always on the best roads, so in that respect this F2.
And I really like the diesel engine. Even with the price for diesel you are still getting better mileage than with gas. It it were offered in bio- diesel, I'd prefer it. I like Ford trucks. I have one with 3. Photo 5/6. | 2.
Ford F2. 50 Cabelas Edition wendy Pennington Richard Cole is a professional dog trainer, a seasoned hunter and guide. He participates in AKC Hunt Tests. I think the extended bed is not for me. They are practical for certain people, but only it if it's durable. I really liked the tailgate step. As a hunter it's a nice feature to have when you're carrying gear. The gun case inside is very nice.
It's hidden and lockable. I liked to have my guns put away where no one sees them when I'm in the field.
I buy all my hunting gear from Cabela's but I wouldn't pay for their name on the side. I'm a Chevy man, but I really think this new F2. The only thing missing is a DVD screen for the backseat passengers. I like the layout of the center floor console, the instrument cluster and navigation system.
Everything is easy to read. I put a million miles on Chevy, but I really love the towing capacity of this new Ford.
I have a one- ton. I would get the long- bed for what I do". Photo 6/6. | 2. Ford F2. 50 Cabelas Edition richard Cole.
